THE COUPLES WERE BEING sent off in five-minute increments. While they were waiting, Eva gave Remo a quick lesson on how to read the map for distinguishing features.

“Sometimes it helps if you turn yourself and the map in the direction you need to go. Whatever makes it understandable,” she encouraged when he gave her a dubious look.

Cajoling Remo with a gentle nudge, Eva said, “Humor me. When we do karaoke, it’s all about whatever you want.”

She hopped on one foot and smiled at him. Remo wasn’t especially tall, but right then it seemed like he was looming over her. It might have been an effect of the trees and the crisp air. It was a great day to be outside, and she was so glad she’d gotten out of her comfort zone to do that instead of wasting away indoors on a Sunday.

“When I get my business on stronger financial footing,” Eva said, “I should get a night manager so I can do fun daytime stuff like this instead of sleeping.”

“There’s nothing stopping you now from moving to more day-friendly hours,” Remo said.

He had a point, but Eva was playing Scarlett O’Hara and thinking about it on a different day.

Remo sucked on his bottom lip as he studied the game rules. “What was it the one lady said about false checkpoints?”

“There might be three in a cluster, and just because it’s the first one we find, doesn’t mean it’s the one we need for our course.” Eva jogged in place. “If you’re not competitive, this won’t work very well. I should have asked that before, huh?”

He waved her words away. Or he was swiping a bug from out of his face. Eva wasn’t sure.

“Need some bug spray? I have extra,” she said as she pulled it out of the pack he carried. Remo shook his head no, and Eva put the can back in case they needed it later.

Remo looked around at the trees and back at her. “I hope you’re ready to read the map and the checkpoints. They’re all Greek to me.”

Eva snorted at the humor of his observation since all the locations were labeled with a Greek letter. Remo took the list out of his back pocket, a bending motion that made his dark hair flop in his brown eyes. She might have been imagining it, but he seemed to have more freedom in his body since she’d given him multiple massages. Eva’s palms itched to touch him again. Consensually, of course.

“We don’t have to go in order to get to all the checkpoints,” Eva told him, “but we do have to get each of them. So if you see places where we can make the journey smarter, let’s figure that out.”

That was all the coaching she’d be able to give Remo because one of the officials at the starting line called out to them.

“Step up to the line. This is your thirty-second warning.”

She wiggled like a small child who had to go to the bathroom, and Remo put his hand on her hip in a gentle way that grounded her excess energy.
